Finding a happy medium with signage...

It's tough out there at the moment. We’re all trying to stretch those pounds a little further, if spending them at all!
Due to the current economic strain the question of the moment is “I’m looking for business signs Southampton, What's the cheapest you can do it for?”

This is a tricky question to answer because cheapest isn't always the best option. Although that’s easy for us to say, its not so easy for the customer to take on board, and when several sign and display companies are battling for the same work its very difficult to refuse to go down ‘the cheapest route’ to simply win the business.
At BigStuff Sign and Display we look to win the future business from that client and in order to do that we need to ensure we supply a product that won’t fail.

In some instances its fine to go for the cheapest option. Point of sale (to a certain extent), Posters, banners,
stickers, leaflets, giveaways... the kind of things thrown away after a short promotional period. These things can be produced low cost by using cheaper substrates, not using a laminate and if the customer is happy to go without these extras and the end product suits the project then sure, money can be saved. If its exhibition kit, Signage, vehicle graphics, Specialist vinyl or banner applications, usually items exposed to the elements where the structural integrity could cause the product to fail, then be warned! It is false economy and can have serious consequences. As with all trades there are Sign and Display companies out there who will cut back on anything to get that price really cheap to win the business and you’ll never se them again. This attitude really effects all of us not only now but in the future when good times return. These companies will only sustain this attitude for a short period until the end user get wise to this and those companies will disappear.

Here’s a few examples of what you wouldn't do...
Do you opt to live in a tent for more than 2 weeks of the year?
Would you buy cheap tyres to go on your expensive car that you run your children to school in all week?
Do you choose the £150 washing machine if you’ve got a large family?
Are you really going to do the Tour de France on a Raleigh Grifter or run the Marathon in plimsolls?

I’m pretty certain that the answer to most of these questions is “No!” And the reason is that those products don't perform well enough for prolonged use and will, most definitely, let you down!

This is exactly the same with display products and we’ve experienced it first hand. When asked to quote we use materials that we know are tried and tested, we’ve used them and know they do what they’re made to do. But many customers want us to use a lesser product to keep costs down. But when it all goes wrong they come straight back to complain. The only way this relationship can go is downhill. What actually happens is the job gets done cheap, it then fails to do what its supposed to do and needs to be done again on the correct materials for the job so you end up spending twice as much money and getting stressed!
